Importance of animals in our eco system

This is a very important topic, not many of us discus, or even think about. The word animal is a very vague and general word. By animals I do not mean a particular specie or group like mammals, I am talking about the animal kingdom and the entire Fauna.

Animals are here for a reason, or else they would not exist. However due to industrialization, cutting down of forests, pollution and a lot of other man made factors, these animals are suffering.

Tigers, leopards stray out of the forests and walk into villages and are killed. The aquatic species die due to oil spills, non decomposable garbage in water bodies. Due to deforestation and destruction of flora, herbivorous animals are starving. Poaching of animals for leather, ivory, bones and other cosmetic and therapeutical items is also causing havoc in the animal kingdom.

Let’s talk about responsibilities. It is actually the governments responsibility to take care of poaching and deforestation, but due to many reasons, some understandable and some pathetic excuses, the government has not been able to protect the animals as it should have. It is the municipal co operations work to sterilize and neuter stray dogs, but we do not see them doing anything, rather they fine us for keeping animals and introduce ridiculous laws like a hefty fine for feeding stray animals.

But whose responsibility is it to reduce pollution, to make sure that the area around where we live remains green, if not for the environment, not for the animals who stay in those trees, then at least for aesthetics.

Blaming the government is very easy, but according to me u need to be pro active and start helping and then expect others to help. Let’s start with the local stray animals, get the Municipal workers to do their work and then move to bigger matters like tigers, saving forests etc.

Rome was not built in a day, but it is necessary to start somewhere.

I agree with you completely on this...but for one thing...its not only the governments responsibility to stop or control poaching...its the demand and the consumption that feeds poaching...and the demand is from people...humans...humans have unending needs...and on top of that get bored of things too soon...so fur, skins, food etc etc...has to have options...variety...so if we can control this want ...this greed to have more and different...maybe what the government is doing might be effective...

I am sorry i could not come online earlier.

Christi, i agree with you.
greed is a part of the human nature. The poachers are killing animals for the money, and they are not going to stop. a possible solution is to educate the consumers. Ngos and other organistaions have to take up the work, and so do we. This is a very complicated problem and it is going to take a lot of time and effort to find a solution that works. but as we have to start somewhere. i run a one man show in my area, i feed the local dogs and i take care of their injuries. but this is nothing compared to what needs to be done. Ranjan is right, we need to get together and tackle this problem..

Dear Ms. Nikita Nain,

United we can save animal world from the
hands of animal traffickers & poachers.
Our government departments are infected with the infection of corruption virus that is the main cause of the rise in the cases of poaching in the National
Parks or Wildlife sancturies in India.
There is also lack of dedicated animal activists in our country.

I’m pleased to know that you are also
caring for the stray animals like dogs.
It’s really a praiseworthy work to care stray animals of our society.Good Luck.

Thanks.

Sicerely

Nikita...i did not completely understand what your work consists of ...I also work towards conservation of wildlife in India as a profession,am still early in my career. But from what i understand people work towards saving animals in different ways, some are Animal Activists working against cruelty towards animals and others are conservationists...and then there is the general public and they are the target audience for the same. Till someone gets through to them...things will not change. And some organisations do take up this kind of work in educating the consumers (there are quite a few in India), but again the consumers are very rarely open to change...people are very reluctant to change their lifestyle. The ability to make the conscious effort in changing even after understanding the effects and consequences of ones actions is lacking.

Hi Christi,
I do not work in any organisation.
i feed the local stray dogs and i take them to the veterinary doctor when wounded or i treat their minor wounds.

i also rescue wounded animals and fish from shops and treat them back to health. some would say that this encourages shop people to ill treat animals, but i pick up the animals for no cost (hence it is a loss for the shop keeper) and i think that the animal/fish should not pay for the ignorance of the shop keeper or trader.

Hi Nikita

Very nice article

Yes I too think that charity starts from home. We all should do our bit to save our ’mother nature’.

We all must try to inculcate simple changes in our individual life styles like using a jute bag for shopping, stop eating non veg. food etc. to reduce our carbon footprints and to support the environment too.

It is the high time we open our eyes and become responsive to various threatning hints of environment like melting glaciers, water shortage etc.otherwise we’ll learn in a hard way.
